Finally Employed!

Dear Journal,

I started work today! My 1st ever job in Sri Lanka. The day went ok... People were friendly, made an effort and not a single person questioned my fluency in Sinhala (which is fabulous cos the 1 day I spent in training at a previous job that I didn't accept every other person asked if I can understand their Sinhala- Which I do, considering I studied in Sinhala up till OLs!)

Hmmm... Wonder how this new 9 to 5 life is going to affect my little bake business?! I am fully planning on continuing baking (cos I am loving the new passion I've discovered for it) and the ultimate goal is to make The Sugar Shack a blooming success... Let's see how it goes!

Maru Partya

Dear Journal,

I know this has nothing to do with baking as such but..... Last weekend a bunch of us went away on a beach side holiday. Must say, by far, the funnest holiday I have been on. There were 15 of us in a Villa with a private pool and a more of less secluded beach! Got there by mid day on Friday (cos I am still unemployed) lounged around by the pool sipping cocktails and watched a beautiful sunset. Most of the others arrived later... Had a small pool party and then at about 3 am we pulled all the deck chairs out to the beach to watch the stars cos it was a clear night!

There was a meteor shower that night and we saw13 shooting stars! (Well, I only saw only like 2 of them cos I was too slow to notice).

Also, I fell! I got through the last 6 months without falling. Was so proud of myself. For crying out loud, I got through 2 months of the cricket with out falling flat on my face... But ummm... I slipped on a wet tile near the pool and fell splat on my bum. Everyone saw. Everyone laughed. Sigh.

Right, so, lemme just add here so that there is no dispute in the future (cos I know there will be).... MARU PARTYA is my phrase. I coined it. I will only reveal the back story on my deathbed because I am utterly ashamed of how the phrase came about (I will get struck down by lightning, let me tell you that much!). But ya, MARU PARTYA is my phrase and now everyone is using it! Fun.

Giving plain old Vanilla the WaWaWoom!

Dear Journal,

Did a bit of experimenting today..... I had run out of CornFlour to make a batch of Chocolate Cupcakes for Lily Petal so I made some Vanilla ones instead. Inspired by the Mothers Day Collection and all the advise and creativity shown/given by Thushninbootha and Swarnie (Who has, by the way, hurt her ankle today for like the 200th time in the last 10 years and thus is fussing about coming on a beach side holiday with us this weekend) I decided to experiment a bit with colours and designs!

I then preceded to photograph the cupcakes all by myself. No Thushninbootha, no TK! Thushninbootha had finally shown me what the 'macro' button in my camera actually did (this after owning the camera for the good part of 4 years). So I thought I will give it a go... It didn't turn out too bad, if I may say so myself.....

Lily Petal; lunch time drama

Dear Journal,

Remember how I am currently working the Breakfast and Lunch shifts at the Lily Petal Cafe? The funniest thing happened there yday during lunch!

We have a big sign up saying that you cant eat food brought from out. Duh! A woman came, sat down and pulled out a rice packet from her bag. So Loku Ammi told her that she cant eat outside food and showed her the massive sign overhead. The woman smiled, put her packet back in her bag and came up to the cashier.

Obvious assumption: She was going to buy something to eat from there and have it. Instead, she walked up to the cashier, reached over and slapped Loku Ammi across the face!
*Gasp* *Shock* *Horror*

So then the sales assistant came running and told the woman to get out. She spat at him and another customer sitting there peacefully eating her lunch, swore at us, slammed the show case, threw some bread on the ground and went out. She stood outside the Cafe for the good part of 10 minutes shouting abuse at us. Raw, sinhala abuse, most of which I personally hadn't even heard before!

Poor, poor Loku Ammi.

Over and out,
Arubuster!

Baking with Swarnie and Thushninbootha!

Dear Journal,

Mothers day orders weren't too bad actually. We reached about 50% of the Vday orders but that was expected. The surprising thing was that there were quite a number of orders from folks I didn't know who had just seen it on FB! Thank heavens for FB! The other noticeable trend at Mothers day was that it was mainly girls who ordered for their mums! LOL!

Since I nearly had a stroke at Valentines trying to stay on top of the orders and cos both MooMoo and TK (my usual helpers) weren't in the country this week, I roped Thushninbootha and Swarnie to come help me with the orders. The plan was that the two of them would come over on Friday evening  and we would make all the decorations and on Saturday I would bake and we can decorate all the cupcakes together... Good plan right?

Except, on Friday we ended up going to Odel for hours and then came home changed and went out dancing. Dad had been mad at me for some reason all day and since MooMoo had run of on one of her fun adventures abroad there was no one to keep the peace at home. He was a bit bugged that I've been out-out a lot lately (which I have to be fair, but then again, your only young once!)

So anyway, he was mad at me, so I kinda told him we were just going for dinner only. So when we were leaving home, he started asking all these questions as to where we were going and what time we will be back.. To which I replied 'dinner'... and ran out of the house! RAN! Like I was a teenager again, afraid of her parents! I ran out of the house with my friends before dad was able to ask any questions! LOL! (The funniest part of this was that I didn't even do that when I was an actual teenager!)

So ya, in short, we didn't actually do any work on the Friday, we danced the night away instead! So Saturday morning, we set out on to make the cupcakes, with just 3 hours of sleep and aching feet! From 10.30 am till 4pm we sat there and baked, iced, cut flowers to M's to butterflies! T'was such a fun day!

And can I just add, Swarnie is far more creative than I am! Too bad she lives in Ausie, cos otherwise I could have tapped her creativity on a more regular basis. And maybe even made her the frosting/decoration director for The Sugar Shack!

The Sugar Shack's Mothers Day Colletion 2011

Dear Journal,

I got the pictures from Thushninbootha during our usual lunch date at the Lily Petal Cafe. She has edited them. A mighty fine job I must say. They are the prettiest cupcakes I've ever made. Now, I just have to sit and wait (calmly) until people start ordering them.

Now, I realize that M-day is in no where as commercial as V-day and people don't splurge as much either but I am really hoping there are some nice kids out there, who love their mums enough to wanna do something nice......

Oh ya, did I mention Highland Butter is out of stock again? Even at the suppliers? Sigh. Tomorrow, on top of all the other things I have to do, I also have to run around town looking for butter. Sigh. Sigh.
On the bright side though, absolutely everyone loved the brownies as my nephews birthday party. Phew!

The pics are refusing to upload today! But they can be found at http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Sugar-Shack/192932414065503

I'm off to bed. Will upload pics tomorrow.

The Sugar Shack Company?

Dear Journal,

I was thinking today.... You know how I have my pseudo-directors? Like TK- Photography/Tech/Media, Thushninbootha- Creative, MooMoo- Financial (cos she gives me most of my ingredients free, instead of an allowance mind you)... How cool would it be if I actually do manage to make The Sugar Shack a actual full blown business with maybe even a Bake shop and regular customers and employees and a board of directors? Wow. That would be pretty fabulous wouldn't it?

(I must mention here, that NakiCharles was my original Creative Director, but then I changed my mind and put Thushninbootha in charge of Creative. Now, I didn't have the balls to tell NakiCharles this. So being the wuss I am, I made Thushninbootha do it. I know, I know. Sad.... In my defense, I have now put NakiCharles in charge of my private social life (Social Director, if you may) cos I don't seem to be able to make many sound decisions when it comes to me, as of late. LOL )

What a day....

Dear Journal,

So I've been helping MooMoo out at the bakery these past couple of weeks... Since the cricket is now over, and I am still unemployed, I sort of needed a reason to get out of bed and change out of my jammies. So I started off by helping out with the lunch shift at the Lily Petal Cafe last week. This was fun. Mostly because Thushninbootha works in the building across the road so she comes over on her lunch break and we sit and have a good old gozz over pastries and Milo!

Today, I started my day at 6.30 am by going to help out with the breakfast shift at Lily Petal, after which I went to the bakery to do the mock ups for my Mothers Day Collection (watch this space). Then spent the afternoon doing the accounts with MooMoo. Accounts is most certainly not my thing. On top of this I seem to have come down with the flue, or flue like symptoms.

Then Thushninbootha came over in the evening. She is the Creative Director for The Sugar Shack. She has finally got her fancy new camera. As my Photographer/Tech Director TK has gone back to Ausie, Thushninbootha brought her new camera over to photograph the new collection.

It was only at 8.30 pm, 14 hours after I started my day that I was able to get down to baking. I had to make 20 Cupcakes and a double batch of Brownies. The Brownies were for my nephew's 2nd Birthday Party tomorrow.
Now, I was tired. I was ill. And I was clearly not thinking straight. So I ended up used double the quantity of chocolate and single measures of all the other ingredients to make the brownies. I had mixed everything and started putting it in the baking tray when I realised that it seemed much smaller than the usual quantity.

Panic stricken I ran to MooMoo and dragged her to the kitchen, mid-shower! So we decided to try mixing the rest of the ingredients to the existing mixture and seeing if it worked. The brownies are out of the oven now. Seems to be fine. Fingers crossed it will taste the same. We shall find out tomorrow.

That was my day. Thushninbootha is editing the pictures as we speak. I will upload them tomorrow.

Good night,

Arubuster.

Back at Lily Petal

Dear Journal,

After a 4 week absence I finally baked a batch of chocolate cupcakes today to put to the Lily Petal Cafe from tomorrow onwards. While I was away MooMoo was getting the cake-man at her bakery (who I don't particularly like btw) to make cupcakes and put to the Cafe so that we wont loose the existing customers. However, since he is a lazy git (pardon my language) he was making some less than fabulous cupcakes!

So I spent the better part of an hour making a poster to advertise that The Sugar Shack cupcakes are back in stock at the Cafe printed it and gave it to Pops (my father) to put up at the cafe.... But he doesn't want to saying that people are going to get confused as to what cupcakes they were eating these past few weeks and as to which are the authentic SS cupcakes and which aren't. Which I get. But still, I really hope they don't think that the lazy-man-cupcakes are the same as mine.

Not an earth shattering problem but just a little issue I had in my little world today....... *Sigh*

Sorry....

Dear Journal,

So sorry for the long long absence! Just when I was getting fully into this baking thing I was given the opportunity to work for the Cricket World Cup being held in SL this year. And since I was unemployed and trying to 'find myself' I jumped at the opportunity! So that's what I've been doing for the last 4-6 weeks! I was in Hambantota for a week then worked the Colombo matches and then was shipped off to Kandy for nearly 10 days.

Hands down this is the most exciting thing I have ever done. Working with ICC officials, traveling around the country, gaining access to the players dressing rooms (yes, I said it, the dressing rooms) and getting to watch every single match for free! There are 2 more matches left in SL, one Quarter Final and one Semi Final and in a matter of 7 days I will have to return to my boring, regular life! and find a proper day job! LOL!

As a result I've not had the time of day to bake. But now I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things (plus I'm kinda broke as hell). So once again, apologies for my long silence. I'm back now.

96 Chocolate Cupcakes

Dear Journal,

Today I made 96 Chocolate Cupcakes, for an order. It is a good thing I am still unemployed, cos there is no way I would've managed it if I had to go to work as well. Luckily, I had the full force of MooMoo and TK backing me up, sifting flour, weighing butter, setting up cupcake cases...

But, I must admit, I did cheat just a little bit. Rather than baking it at home, I went to MooMoo's bakery and did it, mainly because we have the oven capacity there and also because I couldn't be bothered washing/cleaning up at home afterwards.

TK is now back from Galle and she went to town photographing all the cupcakes!

Rosette Disaster

Dear Journal,

So, last night I only managed to get 3 hours of sleep. After a busy day today, I only started to bake the chocolate cupcakes for Lily Petal Cafe after about 10 pm. Didn't realize just how tired I was until I started to do the icing rosettes on the cupcakes, each one was coming out messier and uglier than the last.. Was a right disaster. MooMoo was not pleased and finally had to take over to prevent a small crisis from occurring!

Apparently, according to MooMoo, when you ice cakes (well, cupcakes) your mood comes through in the details and I was not giving it enough love and attention today! As a result I now have 24 cupcakes that look completely different to each other! *Sigh*

TK is off in Galle this weekend, so no photographs to upload (Thank gawd)

A very tired Arubuster, signing off.

Butter Monopoly

Dear Journal,

Due to the earlier mentioned Butter shortage my creativity and productivity were nipped at the bud the last couple of weeks! Apparently the butter-making-machine has packed up and they dont even know when they are going to start repairing it! *Sigh*

MooMoo to the Rescue!
My ever loving mother (fondly referred to as MooMoo) tracked down some supplier/rep and managed to get me 25 KG of Butter! Now that is a LOT of butter! More than I will be able to use in a life time, I think. But Yay, now I can get back to baking with a vengeance!

Lily Petal Cafe

Dear Journal,

I have now started supplying The Sugar Shack cupcakes to the Lily Petal Cafes, down Gregories Road (at the D.S Senanayake end) and Kynsey Road (In front of the cemetery). Currently I'm supplying my plain choc cupcakes for Rs 70 each and so far they seem to be a big hit! I'm waiting till there is a bit more of a fan base in that area to hopefully start supplying the more high end cupcakes that I make!

Cupcake Interview

Dear Journal,

Had my 1st ever Cupcake Interview today at a leading retailer in SL! Baked a box of my finest Chocolate Cupcakes, printed out a price list and went to meet the Cupcake Buyer. (That sounds like a dream job doesn't it? A Cupcake buyer! People handing you free samples all day and you deciding which of the yummy cupcakes your store sells!)

She seemed decently impressed with my plain chocolate cupcakes but wasn't too taken up with the fudge ones as they need to be stored in a fridge over night. Fingers crossed I will hear back soon with some good news.

The Sugar Shack

Dear Journal,

Because I am venturing into baking commercially now I thought it best to find a good name for my little home made business and branch out on my own, rather than go as a part of mum's bakery. How great would it be to print out some pretty cake boxes, flyers and maybe even my very own business card!

After weeks of research and short listing I finally narrowed it down to 2 options with the help of Mom, Dad, TK and two of my friends Boothas and NakiCharles! The final choice was between 'The Batter Bowl Bakery' (which was quite a mouthful) and 'The Sugar Shack'....

I let mum make the final decision and we now have a name for my business....

Sticky Toffee Adventure

Dear Journal,

I don't mean to brag but TK and I made the best Sticky Toffee Cupcakes ever! TK cleaned and chopped the Dates and she also made the best toffee sauce for the center! It tasted like liquid Milk Toffee. Yumm!

So, I made the cupcakes and then had to go out to run some errands before I cleaned up and I ended up getting into a small spat with Gungu (our house keeper), about the mess I had created in our kitchen! Not good.

See below TK's brilliant photography....

Butter Dilemma

Dear Journal,

What a shocker! No Highland Butter anywhere in Colombo today! Even searched all over Pettah! TK and I finally found a sad looking few at a Food City. Same dilemma I had the day of the Bake Sale. Poor dad was running around all day trying to find butter, but it turned out there was a massive shortage! (PS: Anchor Butter is way too expensive to use)

Was planning on making Sticky Toffee Cupcakes but I think I will leave all the experimenting till tomorrow. Enough drama for one day.

Red Velvet Cupcakes

Dear Journal,

Finally made Red Velvet Cupcakes yesterday. Been wanting to make them forever, but finding the right ingredients in SL proved to be quite a task! But now that they have finally got Cream Cheese back in the supermarkets thought I will give it a go.

TK (my sister) loved them and sat for half an hour documenting them. She wants me to post that she is the most awesome photographer ever-ever..... Exhibit A..

The start......

Dear Journal,

So, I’ve been baking for a few years now. Nothing serious, just the odd cupcake and brownie when I’m bored, mostly for friends or to take to Office. But now that I’m in between jobs (well, unemployed) I’ve decided to take this baking thing to the next level.

Mum and I got together and had a Christmas Bake Sale December just gone. It was mostly to fund my party season. It was quite a success. Party season-well funded! Most of my cupcakes and brownies sold out by lunch time and we had to re bake everything in a mighty rush!

Since then I’ve been doing a few orders here and there. It’s very exciting. So I’ve decided to start documenting and keep a blog.

I come from a family of bakers. However, I only discovered my passion for baking a few years ago, when I was living on my own and now I spend most of my time experimenting with different recipe’s, different techniques and using my family and friends as guinea pigs!
