Dear Journal,
I started work today! My 1st ever job in Sri Lanka. The day went ok... People were friendly, made an effort and not a single person questioned my fluency in Sinhala (which is fabulous cos the 1 day I spent in training at a previous job that I didn't accept every other person asked if I can understand their Sinhala- Which I do, considering I studied in Sinhala up till OLs!)
Hmmm... Wonder how this new 9 to 5 life is going to affect my little bake business?! I am fully planning on continuing baking (cos I am loving the new passion I've discovered for it) and the ultimate goal is to make The Sugar Shack a blooming success... Let's see how it goes!

Maru Partya
Dear Journal,
I know this has nothing to do with baking as such but..... Last weekend a bunch of us went away on a beach side holiday. Must say, by far, the funnest holiday I have been on. There were 15 of us in a Villa with a private pool and a more of less secluded beach! Got there by mid day on Friday (cos I am still unemployed) lounged around by the pool sipping cocktails and watched a beautiful sunset. Most of the others arrived later... Had a small pool party and then at about 3 am we pulled all the deck chairs out to the beach to watch the stars cos it was a clear night!
There was a meteor shower that night and we saw13 shooting stars! (Well, I only saw only like 2 of them cos I was too slow to notice).
Also, I fell! I got through the last 6 months without falling. Was so proud of myself. For crying out loud, I got through 2 months of the cricket with out falling flat on my face... But ummm... I slipped on a wet tile near the pool and fell splat on my bum. Everyone saw. Everyone laughed. Sigh.
Right, so, lemme just add here so that there is no dispute in the future (cos I know there will be).... MARU PARTYA is my phrase. I coined it. I will only reveal the back story on my deathbed because I am utterly ashamed of how the phrase came about (I will get struck down by lightning, let me tell you that much!). But ya, MARU PARTYA is my phrase and now everyone is using it! Fun.

Giving plain old Vanilla the WaWaWoom!
Dear Journal,
Did a bit of experimenting today..... I had run out of CornFlour to make a batch of Chocolate Cupcakes for Lily Petal so I made some Vanilla ones instead. Inspired by the Mothers Day Collection and all the advise and creativity shown/given by Thushninbootha and Swarnie (Who has, by the way, hurt her ankle today for like the 200th time in the last 10 years and thus is fussing about coming on a beach side holiday with us this weekend) I decided to experiment a bit with colours and designs!
I then preceded to photograph the cupcakes all by myself. No Thushninbootha, no TK! Thushninbootha had finally shown me what the 'macro' button in my camera actually did (this after owning the camera for the good part of 4 years). So I thought I will give it a go... It didn't turn out too bad, if I may say so myself.....

Lily Petal; lunch time drama
Dear Journal,
Remember how I am currently working the Breakfast and Lunch shifts at the Lily Petal Cafe? The funniest thing happened there yday during lunch!
We have a big sign up saying that you cant eat food brought from out. Duh! A woman came, sat down and pulled out a rice packet from her bag. So Loku Ammi told her that she cant eat outside food and showed her the massive sign overhead. The woman smiled, put her packet back in her bag and came up to the cashier.
Obvious assumption: She was going to buy something to eat from there and have it. Instead, she walked up to the cashier, reached over and slapped Loku Ammi across the face!
*Gasp* *Shock* *Horror*
So then the sales assistant came running and told the woman to get out. She spat at him and another customer sitting there peacefully eating her lunch, swore at us, slammed the show case, threw some bread on the ground and went out. She stood outside the Cafe for the good part of 10 minutes shouting abuse at us. Raw, sinhala abuse, most of which I personally hadn't even heard before!
Poor, poor Loku Ammi.
Over and out,
Arubuster!

Baking with Swarnie and Thushninbootha!
Dear Journal,
Mothers day orders weren't too bad actually. We reached about 50% of the Vday orders but that was expected. The surprising thing was that there were quite a number of orders from folks I didn't know who had just seen it on FB! Thank heavens for FB! The other noticeable trend at Mothers day was that it was mainly girls who ordered for their mums! LOL!
Since I nearly had a stroke at Valentines trying to stay on top of the orders and cos both MooMoo and TK (my usual helpers) weren't in the country this week, I roped Thushninbootha and Swarnie to come help me with the orders. The plan was that the two of them would come over on Friday evening and we would make all the decorations and on Saturday I would bake and we can decorate all the cupcakes together... Good plan right?
Except, on Friday we ended up going to Odel for hours and then came home changed and went out dancing. Dad had been mad at me for some reason all day and since MooMoo had run of on one of her fun adventures abroad there was no one to keep the peace at home. He was a bit bugged that I've been out-out a lot lately (which I have to be fair, but then again, your only young once!)
So anyway, he was mad at me, so I kinda told him we were just going for dinner only. So when we were leaving home, he started asking all these questions as to where we were going and what time we will be back.. To which I replied 'dinner'... and ran out of the house! RAN! Like I was a teenager again, afraid of her parents! I ran out of the house with my friends before dad was able to ask any questions! LOL! (The funniest part of this was that I didn't even do that when I was an actual teenager!)
So ya, in short, we didn't actually do any work on the Friday, we danced the night away instead! So Saturday morning, we set out on to make the cupcakes, with just 3 hours of sleep and aching feet! From 10.30 am till 4pm we sat there and baked, iced, cut flowers to M's to butterflies! T'was such a fun day!
And can I just add, Swarnie is far more creative than I am! Too bad she lives in Ausie, cos otherwise I could have tapped her creativity on a more regular basis. And maybe even made her the frosting/decoration director for The Sugar Shack!

The Sugar Shack's Mothers Day Colletion 2011
Dear Journal,
I got the pictures from Thushninbootha during our usual lunch date at the Lily Petal Cafe. She has edited them. A mighty fine job I must say. They are the prettiest cupcakes I've ever made. Now, I just have to sit and wait (calmly) until people start ordering them.
Now, I realize that M-day is in no where as commercial as V-day and people don't splurge as much either but I am really hoping there are some nice kids out there, who love their mums enough to wanna do something nice......
Oh ya, did I mention Highland Butter is out of stock again? Even at the suppliers? Sigh. Tomorrow, on top of all the other things I have to do, I also have to run around town looking for butter. Sigh. Sigh.
On the bright side though, absolutely everyone loved the brownies as my nephews birthday party. Phew!
The pics are refusing to upload today! But they can be found at http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Sugar-Shack/192932414065503
I'm off to bed. Will upload pics tomorrow.

The Sugar Shack Company?
Dear Journal,
I was thinking today.... You know how I have my pseudo-directors? Like TK- Photography/Tech/Media, Thushninbootha- Creative, MooMoo- Financial (cos she gives me most of my ingredients free, instead of an allowance mind you)... How cool would it be if I actually do manage to make The Sugar Shack a actual full blown business with maybe even a Bake shop and regular customers and employees and a board of directors? Wow. That would be pretty fabulous wouldn't it?
(I must mention here, that NakiCharles was my original Creative Director, but then I changed my mind and put Thushninbootha in charge of Creative. Now, I didn't have the balls to tell NakiCharles this. So being the wuss I am, I made Thushninbootha do it. I know, I know. Sad.... In my defense, I have now put NakiCharles in charge of my private social life (Social Director, if you may) cos I don't seem to be able to make many sound decisions when it comes to me, as of late. LOL )
